Hot Tip:

The Limhamn docks and Sibbarps Kallbadhus (swimming spot), just SW of downtown have beautiful sunset views over the water and of the famous Öresund Bridge.

A short 40 minute bridge drive from Copenhagen, Malmö was once Denmark's 2nd largest city. The medieval port town and future industrial hotspot became a center for herring fishing in the 15th century before being transferred to Swedish control in the 17th century. It is now filled with beautiful planned parks and cobbled stone streets that criss-cross a rectangular canal system on Sweden's South West coast.

   a bit of background...

..........................The Davidshallsbron, (David hall bridge) canal crossing is lined with bronze shoe castings honoring famous Malmö art personalities. 📸 The instillation by Åsa Maria Bengtsson is called WAY TO GO. The footbridge also has a pair of talking trashcans that congratulate pedestrians when they throw away trash. 📸

FUN FACT:

Having traveled all over Sweden, I think Malmö may be my favorite city after Stockholm. The waterfront and peaceful neighborhoods are so lovely and give it a real small town feel, but it has big city appeals too, it even hosted Eurovision three times, the only non-capital city to ever do so.

♦️ The Öresund Bridge 📸 connecting Malmö to Copenhagen - second longest bridge in

in Europe, nearly 5 m (8 km) & titular bridge of mystery crime series THE BRIDGE

🔸 Malmöhus/ Malmö Castle 📸 - oldest (1526 - 1539) preserved Nordic Renaissance

castle. Over the years it housed a prison; even holding James Hepburn, 4th Earl

of Bothwell, (the 3rd husband of Mary, Queen of Scots) & WWII refugees. It now

houses museums of natural history, art museum & aquarium

♦️ Ribersborgsstranden - popular beach with a view of Turning Torso, the twisted

apartment complex

................ There is an alternative theory behind the origin of the name Malmö - if you split the word into two Mal Mö translates to ground up maiden, and legend says a maiden was once ground to death at the möllestenen, or millstone in Malmo's stortorget (= big square.) 📸

It doesn't seem likely as the town was named centuries before the millstone was placed in 1538 (believed by historians to have been from a monastery,) but advocates of the theory claim the stone was placed in the square because of its earlier connection to the towns history.
